Installing a Better Energy Efficient Future in the Illawarra

Energy+ Illawarra (E+I) have reached a major project milestone this week with the installation of key household devices that will support energy efficiency in the home whilst maintaining comfort and well-being.

The RDA Illawarra led consortium project, now in its second year, has reached a practical stage with the installation of tangible energy saving devices such as a solar hot water system, LED integrated ceiling fans, in-home electric display and draught seals. Once installed research is conducted to determine the positive impact of these devices on the resident, their lifestyle and overall energy consumption. RDA Illawarra CEO, Natalie Burroughs said “this is an exciting time for the Consortium as we move into the next phase of practical installations. These installations will make a real difference to people’s lives. We are also hoping to see some positive effects in terms of future research, education and policy decisions at a federal government level.”.

Selected Warrigal residents from the program will have their homes retrofitted with a solar hot water system, door seals, ceiling fans and an in-home display which will measure power use as it occurs. The residents will be part of the ’Monitored Homes’ Project , receiving over $10,000 worth of energy efficiency items installed free of charge, as well as regular monitoring, to track the results of the retrofit.

E+I is a three-year, $2.3M project funded by the Federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. The program is to trial and explore the best way to influence positive energy efficiency behaviour and break down any barriers to change for those who are over 60. And whom have to make ends meet on an income equivalent to the age pension. The program covers the interviewing, monitoring and educating of over 800 residents and energy efficiency installations to200 homes across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee areas.
