'Hard Hat' Tour in Queanbeyan

Warrigal, a community not-for-profit has just conducted its first 'hard hat' tour of its state-of-the-art residential aged care home located on Canberra Avenue, Queanbeyan.

The tour is a way of showing partners, such as local recruitment and training organisations, the new model of aged care, which derives its inspiration more from a ‘cruise ship’ than a traditional care home. This model has been successfully implemented in Warrigal’s Shell Cove home which was awarded the 2018 Australian Property Council Award for Excellence in Retirement Living.

Construction of the complex which began in 2018, and is stated for completion later 2019 is well underway.

The complex contains 124 suites and 8 serviced apartments, which are designed to cater for those wanting a carefree, supported lifestyle but not ready for residential care, or wishing to be near a partner in residential care.

The new development will not only double the number of residential care beds available to cater for demand in the local community, but will offer a completely new type of retirement living never before seen in this region.

Social connection underpins the design of the building where there are no barriers between the residential care home, retirement village, the groups who come to use the community spaces and the broader community.

The complex is close to amenities such as Queanbeyan Shopping Centre, the bowling club and Queanbeyan Hospital, but is also provides an accessible and affordable option for Canberra residents.

“We believe people should live their best lives at every stage and be connected to the community they live in, so this care home will include a café, a wellness centre, a hairdresser and a commercial bistro – all open to the general public,” said Leanne Taylor, Executive Leader Strategic Innovation and Development.

Warrigal previously operated a smaller residential care home on the site which was demolished to make way for the new build. The facility is adjacent to Warrigal’s 52 independent living villas and apartments.

“We believe this is the kind of residential living our customers are now looking for and will increasingly be the model they want to see,” said Leanne Taylor.

This exciting development joins Warrigal’s 9 other care homes and 9 independent living villages and follows in Warrigal’s 50 year tradition of providing innovative, affordable, quality care as a not-for-profit provider.
